Canadian Girl Guides scrap U.S. travel
The organization announced this week that it will not be taking its intrepid membership on treks to the U.S. A summer trip to a camp in California has been changed to an alternate destination. The move is in response to President Donald Trump's policies tightening immigration.
"While the United States is a frequent destination for Guiding trips, the ability of all our members to equally enter this country is currently uncertain," noted an announcement on the organization's website.
During his run for the presidency, Trump talked about stopping Muslims from coming into the country. In 2015, for example, he issued a news release calling for "a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what is going on."
But since the election Trump's attempts to do so have been met with resistance, principally within the court system. An executive order targeting seven predominantly Muslim countries was halted in court. A second attempt targeting six predominantly Muslim countries -- Iran, Somalia, Sudan, Libya, Syria and Yemen -- has also been challenged.
Canada was not directly impacted in either ban. But the country has resettled refugees, including approximately 40,000 Syrians, according to the government's website. Pictures of Girl Guides on social media websites show a diverse membership.
The statement on the group's website said the decision to stay away from the U.S. was a difficult one. "We hope that members will appreciate this reflects our commitment to inclusivity and equal opportunities for all girls and women."
