On its website, the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History notes that one of its most popular exhibits is called “The First Ladies.” That exhibition received an update Jan. 14, when Michelle Obama’s gown from President Barack Obama’s second inauguration went on display.

The Smithsonian is getting the gown through a one-year loan from the White House to include in “The First Ladies” exhibit, which celebrates its centennial this year. The exhibition, which opened Feb. 1, 1914, has changed in size, location and focus several times. It has been at the Smithsonian’s history museum, which opened in 1964, for the past 50 years.
For the January 2013 inaugural, Michelle Obama wore a long ruby-colored chiffon gown, with a cross-halter strap neckline and deep back, featuring velvet details. It was custom made by designer Jason Wu. The white dress from the first Obama inauguration, a gift to the museum, will not be on display this year.
