Would business execs make good presidents?
The frequently profane business magnate apparently believes so, and on Tuesday he won the Republican primary in New Hampshire. As it turns out, a significant number of Americans across the country agree that his business background could make someone a good president, according to a recent Gallup Poll.
When asked whether they considered being a business executive excellent, good, fair or poor preparation for someone to become an effective president, 17 percent answered excellent. Another 34 percent thought it was good preparation. So more than half, 51 percent, thought being a business executive is excellent or good preparation -- up from 47 percent in 2003.
In his bid as Republican nominee, Trump has shot by candidates with significant governing experience -- prominently, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (who left office in January), New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, among others.
But despite Trump's success, Americans believe governing experience is important. Specifically:
- 72 percent thought serving as governor was excellent or good preparation to become an effective president; 65 percent said the same about being a member of the U.S. Senate or House of Representatives.
- 63 percent said being secretary of state was excellent or good preparation; 56 percent said the same about being a member of the president’s Cabinet.
